A golden homage to Kobe Bryant

On 26 January 2020, the world public was rocked by one of the major sporting tragedies of this millennium.

Basketball star Kobe Bryant, barely 41, died in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles. Among the dead were all nine people on board, including Gianna Bryant, Kobe’s 13-year-old daughter and an aspiring basketball player.

The news of the death of one of the best and most charismatic athletes of all time has not only touched those who regularly get up in the middle of the night to watch the NBA basketball league through small screens. Kobe was not only a great basketball player, but also a very inspiring man.

His motivation and unwavering will were, so to speak, contagious.

Jakob, who was just hanging out with friends on the evening of Kobe’s death, says:

”I don’t follow basketball in too much detail, but Kobe has always been my favourite. With his approach and mindset, he represented a great inspiration both off the field and on it. I greatly appreciated him in this regard.

»After Slovenian time, the evening turned into night, when we learned of the tragic news. In an instant, I had a spontaneous idea to make a really special skateboard in his memory. Of course not for him, but to give it to one fan - I didn't want to make money to the detriment of the tragedy.«

That same evening he took a pencil and a piece of paper and began to sketch. The next day he perfected the sketch with the help of a computer program.

»I’ve been thinking a lot about how to emphasize his ‘black mamba’ mentality as much as possible on a skateboard.«

For the first time, he included 24-carat thin gold leaf in the design, which he glued to the skateboard, thus emphasizing various details. At the bottom of the board is a large portrait of Kobe, and below is a snake – black mamba – and a quote: »Heroes come and go, but legends stay forever.« On the top is a large inscription »Always remembered.«

Hočevar made two very similar skateboards. “At the time, they were probably the most beautiful products I’ve ever made.” He then connected with the Gros Basket store. Together they organized a prize game and gave a skateboard to the lucky winner.

A world-famous musician rides our skateboard

JP Cooper rides a skateboard made especially for him by Jakob Hočevar.

JP Cooper is a big name in the world of the entertainment industry. The British musician is best known for his collaboration with DJ Jonas Blue, with whom he recorded the single Perfect Strangers.

He has more than 100,000 followers on Instagram, and has performed live in front of the sold-out Wembley, England’s largest stadium.

In addition to the above, JP Cooper also rides a skateboard made especially for him by Jakob Hočevar.

How come that the world-class star through all possible bidders decided on a young Slovenian with a big idea?

Years ago, Jacob’s sister attended an education for young musicians in England. Once, one of her performances on the Island was also visited by Jakob, where he met Joshua, a musician and the founder of a company that provided training. When he introduced him to his work, he was so impressed with the JH_boards brand that he invited Jakob to participate.

He knew that JP Cooper would be involved in his project. He also knew that the skateboard go just perfectly with his image. Jacob therefore asked if he could make a special custom skateboard for him.

How does Jakob remember working together?

”This project was a really big thing for me, probably the biggest so far. I gladly accepted the challenge. I made a small cruiser suitable for city driving according to the client’s wishes, and at the same time I left a strong author’s mark on it.

When he sent the skateboard to England, Joshua was so impressed with it that he immediately asked if he could make another one for Cooper’s manager. Soon after, another skateboard travelled across the English Channel, and both were presented to distinguished guests at a special event.

»Maybe I’m just a little sorry that I wasn’t there at the time. I heard the skateboards unpacked very ceremoniously,” is thinking Jakob somewhat humorous.

”Of course, I was extremely pleased that we successfully completed the project. As with any other skateboard, I was most pleased the end users were satisfied with them.

A board like never before? Why not

Jakob said in an interview for Delo magazine...

”I still make all the skateboards by hand, so they are a bit more expensive. Even if I want to make two exactly the same skateboards, they will be different due to the human factor. As a result, I target customers who know how to appreciate it.

He also talked about his beginnings – what inspired him to make skateboards at the end of primary school.

»I was coming home from school. I spotted a guy carrying a very ‘cool’ longboard in his hand (a longer skateboard designed for a relaxed ride). II thought, why wouldn't I do something like that?«

Skateboarding was sometimes considered a strong subculture. Skaters had their own customs, their own culture, their own dressing style, their own taste for music…

»It seems to me that this is no longer the case in Slovenia,” said Hočevar, who, interestingly, was never overly enthusiastic about performing tricks in skate parks; the skateboard is used only as a means of transport. Nevertheless, he is well aware of the differences in the requirements of different customer profiles

Skaters prefer skateboards made out of veneer as it provides strength and flexibility. They have a kicktail (upwards bent tips) to make it easier to drive around curbs and do tricks. Anyone who would like to ride relaxed, comfortable, soft, will prefer to choose a less curved skateboard, such as a longboard. Longboard was invented by surfers in California in the mid-1950s. When there were no waves, they attached wheels to their boards and meandered across the asphalt between people instead of catch ocean. Perhaps even more convenient are cruisers, which are slightly smaller and easier to carry.

A 19-year-old Slovenian who succeeded with handmade skateboards

He is a self-taught genius, and today his very popular skateboards are the result of patient work and persistent research, to which he devoted all his youth. He has countless ideas for new products, and sometimes they don’t let him sleep«, wrote about Jakob Hočevar Barbara Kotnik, a One plus journalist.

In an interview, Hočevar said:

”Making skateboards for me is a kind of relaxation, like meditation. I am very fascinated when I start from scratch, just with an idea in my head, and when I finish it, there is a final product in front of me. It brings me significantly more joy than spending hours and hours in front of a computer and playing games.

He also described the usual process of making a skateboard.

”First I choose a suitable wood, most skateboards are made of veneer, and then I press it in a heated mould to get the shape of a skateboard. I then cut out the shaped veneer, roughly and finely sand it and drill holes where I finally attach the chassis. Only then I can start painting. Some customers want to keep the wooden appearance, while others want a skateboard that is decorated all over the surface.
